Shoot with Brian Ulrich

A few days ago I had the pleasure of shooting Brian Ulrich from NEXT.

It was fun to do a shoot with someone didn't mind my idea of spitting several gallons of water all over my studio floor and managed to not hit my camera once.
However, I did fall on the soaking wet studio floor several times and at some point my hand was covered in blood from falling into a sharp object.

Turned out that he is a talented musician as well... check out his tunes here.

Aside from his lovely personality, I am quite smitten with his scars.

VH1's "Tough Love" Billboard

The billboards I shot for VH1's new show "Tough Love" are now on La Cienega and Olympic Blvd in LA.

I've worked on a ton of VH1 shows in the past year, but this one is clearly my top favorite of this upcoming season!

Beautiful Decay : The Alexandria Hotel

Once upon a time, in the Alexandria Hotel's heyday, movie stars and other celebrities, including Valentino, Mary Miles Minter, Sarah Bernhardt, Enrico Caruso and Jack Dempsey were guests.

Charlie Chaplin reportedly kept a suite at the Alexandria and did improvisations in the lobby, and western star Tom Mix reportedly rode his horse through the lobby. The large oriental rug in the lobby was called the "million-dollar carpet", because there was purportedly a $1 million worth of business done there every day.

It was there that D.W. Griffith, Mary Pickford and Douglas Fairbanks met in 1919 to form United Artists. U.S. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, William Howard Taft and Woodrow Wilson, and many foreign dignitaries, also stayed at the hotel while visiting Los Angeles.

Today, it's refuge to the adventurous, the fearless, the unwanted ... and if you can sneak by one of the sleepy security guards, you can wander around in the empty hallways, peek into half closed doors or sneak up to the spectacular roof.
Just don't get caught.

Eliza

On my last trip to London I shot a story with young british starter up models in a run down motel in Camden town - I prefer shooting people who either are new to modeling or no models at all.

One of them was Eliza from Select Models - her agent had called me the previous day and told me about this girl that had just walked in a few hours before.

He sent me a polaroid that he just had snapped and needless to say, I had to shoot her.

A stunning kid. She looked like a scared little boy, resembling a female Elvis in a way, which she told me was the reason why the kids in school bullied her. One girl even had cut her face with a knife once, she told me, so she decided to leave school and try modeling. Getting beaten by kids in school surely wasn't what she had in mind for herself.

My shoot with her was the first she ever did.

"You know, this will be the first and last time I'll ever get to shoot you", I told her. She gave me a startled look.

I had felt instantly that this girl was quite special inside and out, but telling her that she'll be one of those knockout supermodels in a matter of months was a bit too early to say to a girl who was always hated by the kids in school and didn't look like the kind of girl you'd expect on the cover of the world's most sought after magazines.

"It's OK to be different, because that's what makes you so special", I said , and smiled.

I could relate to her all too well. And it was a beautiful thing for me to photograph her, someone who felt so displaced and disconnected from the world, feeling unwanted and disliked, because she was judged by her mates, simply by being different.

Looks like I wasn't wrong about how I felt about this girl after all...

I bet that the girl who cut Eliza's face back then, now wishes she never had. And it makes me sad that in a way that it takes being on the cover of a magazine to be considered desirable and beautiful.

But I think most people don't see real beauty simply because they just don't bother looking closely enough.

I shot this footage in the province of Guantánamo, near Baracoa, with a small Leica D-Lux 3. Towards the end of the video I held the camera 1/2 inch above the waters.

And if I would have dropped it, it would have been well worth it.

Sasha Grey - Steven Sonderbergh's New Star

I am so proud of Miss Sasha Grey.
When I blogged about our first photo shoot together, roughly a month after her arrival in LA, I knew she was more than "just" another porn star.
After our first shoot together, a series of many others followed.
Most recently, Steven Sonderbergh completed his latest film The Girlfriend Experience with Sasha as lead.
You go girl!
